prepare to quake with fear

I'm really reluctant to post this, because frankly, I'm embarrassed! A while back I was feeling inspired by some pretty images I'd seen of vintage paper mache busts, and thought it might be a fun project to make one of my own, with a modern twist.

So I rounded up my supplies and built a mold.

Then I used pipe cleaners to construct the facial features.

And that's when the real terror set in ....

I lovingly paper mache'd the little guy, only to be horrified by his mummy-like appearance. But it was nothing a little high-gloss paint couldn't fix, or so I thought ...

AHHH!!!

That's when I realized that I'd inadvertently created a replica of the Jigsaw mask from those Saw movies (which I've never seen, for the record). For some reason I decided that a fun, bold stripe might make him look a little less nightmare-inducing.

No such luck. He's still every bit as creepy, in my opinion. Sigh. I really thought I was creating an quirky, one-of-a-kind little piece of art for our home, and I ended up with what looks like a mummified burn victim.

Lately I've been really inspired by the look of graph paper, so maybe I'll try putting on another layer of paper mache, this time using graph paper? I don't know. Anyone else have any ideas for how I could salvage this mess of a project? Besides using it as Halloween decor?

  2. You could sand it with sand paper, very lightly....Which would give it a softer look! You could cover it in buttons... Which would be very cool!! Good Luck

  3. What if you got one of those mardi gras mask at the craft store - that way, you would have at least a guide to use for the eyes and nose.

And I like Jader's idea to cover it with something, too.

  4. Really funny blog post! Sorry to say I got quite a laugh out of it. I would say scratch that guy and start over. I think you will surely learn from what you experienced with Mr Saw there, and make a much less scary bust.

  5. LOL! "Saw" is sorta, kinda, exactly what I thought at some point in the pictures. Sorry! You thought it too though! ;)

I've got nothing to offer. Had I even attempted this, my hands would've been covered in papercuts from scrunching the newspaper together in step 1.

I really like the idea of graph paper. Maybe you could fill him in a little and he could just be a more round-headed kind of guy? Or look like a bulb. But, you could make that work, I'm sure. You're THAT talented. :)

  8. Mary Grace, I made one of these in an art class, and we started out by making a thin cast of a partner's face with plaster gauze bandage strips. It was fun and only a little messy! ;p I vote for a re-try!
