Of a beautiful baby named Petrie.

Remember in this post when I raved about my love for this sofa from The Breakup? That movie came out in June of '06, and I've been drooling over that sofa ever since. I love the combined look of midcentury and modern, I love the tufted cushions, and I love the thin armrests and legs. 

I tried for a while to figure out who made the sofa, and the only thing I could find was the Stylus sofa. The very helpful fourth door pointed me in the right direction, and it's actually the Petrie Sofa from Crate & Barrel. It's named after Rob and Laura Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke Show. Isn't that cute? The C&B Petrie sofa has not only been in The Breakup, but also Lipstick Jungle and Brothers and Sisters.

It makes a huge difference in the room, and I am still pinching myself because I can't believe that it's really ours to keep:) I was going to save this post until Monday, but I just couldn't wait!

If anyone needs me and Jemima, we'll just be lounging about glamorously on our glamorous new sofa.

orange you glad you read white waxflower?

Orange is EVERYWHERE these days. It seems to be all the rage in the decor mags, shows and blogs. Everyone raved about Meryl Streep's house in It's Complicated, and it had lots of orange accents. I wonder if that helped move the craze along?

Meryl's bathroom. Wouldn't you love to have that gray and white claw-foot tub?

Her bedroom. The two pictures above the headboard look sort of awkwardly placed to me, but I love everything else.

Colorful accents on a white-and-neutral pallet? Yes, please!

In the movie she's having an architect redesign her house, and she keeps talking about him building the "kitchen she's always wanted". I'll take this "old" one, Meryl.

Are those things on the table orange, brown and white dominos? I can't figure it out.

oh, how I love this sofa

if you've seen The Break-Up, you already know that the interior scenes of their condo are absolutely stunning. The sets were soooo beautifully done, you'll wish you could just move right in. I'm not usually a fan of warm colors ... you've probably noticed by now that I prefer light and bright spaces ... but their condo is just lovely.

My favorite piece of all is without a doubt ... that heavenly sofa. It's a perfect blend of mid-century and modern, and everything from the tufted back to the thin armrests is flawless.

BTW, these images came from Hooked on Houses, from her TV/Movie section. If you haven't checked it out yet, you really should. It's awesome.

My husband is an expert Googler, so I put him to work finding out who makes the sofa. He tracked it down, and it's the Haro sofa by Stylus. You have to complete a form to find out where dealers are, so I don't even know if you can get it in San Diego. But I'm determined to get one sooner or later!


Disclaimer: it's been a few years since I watched this movie, and I don't remember much of it. If you watch it with your small child and something really foul is said or done and your child is irreparably scarred, don't blame me and say I highly recommended it. All I am endorsing is their sofa!

meg ryan's pretty digs

I just adore Meg Ryan, so I was super excited when I saw that Elle Decor was featuring her lovely Martha's Vinyard home.

 She definitely has a constant theme going on in your house. You might call it beachy, minimalist-chic.

That looks like MY living room rug!

This kitchen takes my breath away. All those windows, the great big wood table island, the cool, industrial-looking chair, the beams on the celing, the hanging lamps. It's just perfection.

You can never have too much white!

The article mentions that the bed is from Pottery Barn. Gotta love a celeb that shops where us "regular people" shop!

this one's for the movie lovers

One of the best things about living in SoCal is being close to where all the magic of movie-making happens. I've devoted entire Saturdays to driving around looking at the sweet old houses of Jimmy Stewart, Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles, etc., as well as lots of houses that were used in my favorite films.

When I stumbled on this guy's flickr page, it was like hitting the jackpot. He has page after page of these photos! Here are some of my favorites:) 

I was smitten with this house the minute I saw it on You, Me and Dupree. I can't resist a cute craftsman! Here's a still from the movie (on top), and on the bottom is a picture of the actual house in an LA neighborhood.

The Orpheum Theater on Broadway in LA. They didn't have to change much to get it looking like a 1960's street for the movie That Thing You Do!

This adorable street from That Thing You Do is in Orange, CA ... in fact, it's just around the corner from where we attend church! There's some great places to eat around there, so this street is very, very familiar to me;)

It's hard to recognize this beautiful, green neighborhood in LA as the desert-like "Bailey Park" from It's a Wonderful Life, but it is! Here's a fun fact for you that I learned from the It's a Wonderful Life DVD special features: the entire movie was filmed in LA, in the summer, during an intense heat wave! In the iconic scene where Jimmy Stewart is running down the streets yelling "HELLO BEDFORD FALLS!" as the snow falls, he was actually in LA in the sweltering heat!

This little house has come a long way from it's bare, dusty beginnings when it was used as a house in "Bailey Park" in It's a Wonderful Life.

In I Love You, Man, Sidney was a laid-back guy who didn't worry too much about landscaping. It looks like the real owners in Venice Beach, CA try a little harder.

If you've ever been to the Griffith Observatory in LA, you know that they're very proud that the observatory was practically a main character in Rebel Without a Cause. Here's a still from one of the many scenes that takes place there. I can't believe you used to be able to drive right up to it. That must have been nice. Now you have to park half a mile down the mountain and hike up!

Pasadena is full of charming old homes and streets just like this one, and I've driven by this house a few times to show it to visitors from out of town! It's just as cute in person as it is in the movie, though it looks a little smaller in person. It's the home from Father of the Bride:)

How adorable is this little LA house from Nightmare on Elm Street? I want it! Should I buy this one first, or the one from You, Me and Dupree? Decisions, decisions.

By now you've probably caught on to how obsessed I am with the city of San Diego. This gorgeous hotel is the Hotel Del Coronado, and it's beautiful inside and out. I was just there with my buddy Jillian! It was featured in the movie Some Like it Hot.

In fact, here we are in virtually the same spot as Tony Curtis was!

a few little changes:)

As I'm sure you've noticed ... we have a new background image here at white waxflower! I loved the trellis, but this sweet floral is just a little more "me". It looks like a scrap of fabric I'd pick up at a thrift store somewhere and try to make a pillow out of. I've added several new bloggers to my blog roll, so make sure to check those out:) I also have a new tagline for my banner: "living life like i'm in a nora ephron movie". In case you don't know who Nora Ephron is, she's the genius behind such classics as When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, Bewitched, Sleepless In Seattle, Kate & Leopold and Julie & Julia.

and the Oscar goes to ...

Well, the Oscars are upon us, and tomorrow night we'll all know what the Best Picture (according to the Academy, anyway) of 2009 was. I thought it might be fun to take a look back at the sets of the Best Picture winners from the end of each decade. Starting with 1929 and working our way up to 1999!

The Broadway Melody - 1929

I want that medicine cabinet and that bathtub! The only thing cuter than this simple little bathroom set is those costumes. I guess those are supposed to be underwear, or bathing suits. Whatever it is, you girls look adorable! 

Gone With The Wind - 1939

I was a bit too distracted by the gorgeousness that is Clark Gable to really look at this room effectively, but once I pried my eyes away I got quite curious about that enormously fluffy rug! What is that? It's quite glamourous, whatever it is. This whole room oozes with over-the-top glamour! Oh Scarlett, you would.

All the King's Men - 1949

Tufted upholstery is all the rage these days, and these fellas have a large tufted couch! Lucky. Also loving that huge lampshade, and the decanter on the silver tray. And of course, who doesn't love built-in bookshelves?

Ben Hur - 1959

The marble-top table is beautiful, but I LOVE that blue fabric on the table ... it looks like some sort of tapestry. Oddly, it's very similar to a fabric I've had in my head (but never seen in real life) that I want to make pillows out of for our bedroom.

Midnight Cowboy - 1969

This is two sides of the room, and standing in the middle of the room were two naked people exiting through the door way. I try to keep things G-rated and bottom-free around here, so I took the liberty of editing this photo a bit;) Nevertheless, this room has tons of inspiration. The pink rotary phone is adorable, that white-on-white lamp is fabulous, and I spy a vintage portrait! My favorite. Even the upholstery is cute! The only thing I'm really not feeling is that red and gold art on the right side of the room.

Kramer vs. Kramer - 1979

I couldn't find any particularly inspiring images from the indoor sets of this movie, but I did love the color scheme of this poster. Navy blue, light blue and a leafy green? Sounds like a great color scheme for a preppy, nautical-themed Cape Cod sunroom.

Driving Miss Daisy - 1989

Awwww, this movie is so sweet! Looooving all the antique appliances, even though I'm not sure what they do! The tile floor is adorable, and I LOVE the subway tile on the walls! 

American Beauty -1999

I've actually never seen this movie, but I love this set! Every single piece is gorgeous. I want to know more about whatever that striped upholstery to the right is, though!

If anything interesting wins Best Picture for 2009 tomorrow night, maybe I'll be back with a breakdown of my likes and dislikes of that set:)

the family home

It was love at first sight when I saw Family Stone with my dear buddy Jillian, back when it was out in theaters. Maybe it's because I'm such a Mama's girl, or maybe I could relate to the big-family aspect (there's five kids in the Stone family), but I loved this movie. I even listed it in my top five favorite Christmas movies:)

What's not to love about this house? It's adorable.

It's clear that the Stone children were allowed to do a bit of their own decorating when they were kids (so was I!), and the set designers did a great job of showing the children's individual personalities. Just look at Everett's room - you can tell he was bound to be a future businessman/world traveler.

Artsy and sassy Amy must have gone through a bit of a rebellion. She moved to the attic!

Love all the woodwork and the built-in bookshelves.

Love the brick wall and the table used as a kitchen island. I've blogged about my love for antique tables used as a kitchen island before.

Nothing says "family" like a big wall of black and white photographs. I need to start taking our film camera with us everywhere so I can start a photograph collection of our own little family.
