Doesn't the name of this post sound like a great, pretentious title for a best-selling memoir? Badly Drawn Sketches of an Un-Loved Bedroom could totally be the new A Million Little Pieces. Haha, anyway ... several months ago I posted this picture of our master bedroom closet. I had worked hard to get the space ridiculously organized, and I was proud of it! Lest you think all of our closets look like this, however, allow me to show you this ...
Let's zoom in on the more problematic section of the closet, shall we? Here's what we have here:
- camera equipment
- a grill/smoker
- camping tables
- suitcase stuffed full of books (don't ask)
- weights
- patio rug
- violin
- scarves
- box full of odds and ends that we need to return to people. If we've borrowed a book or DVD from you and haven't given it back yet, chances are it's in that black and white box!
It feels a little funny calling a picture that looks like a second grader drew it my "ideal" anything, but here is how the coat closet would ideally end up looking. The smoker and the patio rug stay, as well as the boxes on the top shelf, but now we have room for scarves, coats, shelves for the camera equipment, as well as another one of those handy shoe-holders that you see in the master bedroom closet up there. We always end up with a big pile of shoes downstairs anyway, so we might as well have a place to put them!
Where will we put the suitcase o' books, the weights, and the violin, you ask? Well, that brings me to my point:
This is our guest bedroom, and while it's a lovely place to host our guests, it's not very practical for daily use. Back when we lived in a one-bedroom apartment, I daydreamed of having an extra bedroom. I had visions of us using the extra space as a place to read, watch movies and drink our coffee. When I heard other people say they never set foot in their guest bedroom I thought "that would never happen to us!" But, sure enough, we hardly ever set foot in there. Which is a shame, because it's a nice, sunny room, and we are letting a large portion of our square footage go unappreciated!
Here is a (very) rough sketch of the current layout.
A) The main thing we need in this guest bedroom is a place to store our books. This layout includes bookshelves, as well as a little "home office" area, which would be nice, but realistically I'm not sure we'd actually use it that often. But maybe we would? Do you any of you have home offices, and if so, do you actually use them?
B) The only big change in this layout is that we'd swap the giant nightstand for a sitting area. Hopefully that (might?) entice us to spend more time in this room. But something tells me we'll still just go straight to the downstairs sofa when we want to chill. Plus, it doesn't give us any furniture that could be used to store things like the violin and the weights.
C) This one is the least guest-friendly, as it would involve getting rid of the bed all together and having our guests sleep on a pull-out sofa, but it would allow us to bring in an entertainment center, which could mean a second TV and a place for the video game stuff to stay out, as well as bookshelves. It would more or less become a family room, and I'm pretty sure we would actually use a room like this on a regular basis.
D) This one is the easiest of all the options, because it involves a minimal amount of furniture buying/selling, and still gives us that family room/game room feeling. For this option we would push the bed against the wall, line it with oversized pillows, and bring in an entertainment center and bookshelves. This would leave us with a sofa-ish place to hang out, but still provide a "real" bed for guests. This comes with one big problem, though ... is it okay to use a double/full bed as a daybed? I tried to Google this to see if it's "allowed" or not, but I couldn't find anything! I know traditionally daybeds are twin beds, so is it a huge no-no to make a double bed into a daybed? Someone tell me, because I don't know!
Which option do you like best? Do you have a guest bedroom, and if so, do you ever use it, and what do you use it for?
hi marygrace,
ReplyDeletewe do have a home office b/c my husband actually works from home so it is used everyday. since i painted it black and we took out the twin bed that we thought our grandaughter would use when she spent the night, and replaced it w/an ikea loveseat, even i use the room now too. i love the black walls so much. i want to paint our bedroom black now.
i saw a double bed once at a showcase house that was used as a daybed. it was a huge room though and it was draped in a canopy sort of thing. it was gorgeous but i think scale matters here.
ok there is my 2 cents.

Hey MG, I love all your options my favorite is A and D. I love the desk in room A. We have a desk in my craft room and i love it for our bills, records and paperwork. it's nice to have it all in one place. I also like option D to make your bed into a day bed. You have to do what works for you and i don't think making a full bed into a daybed is a decorating "fauz pas." And for what you want to be able to do in that room that really would be perfect! Another idea is to do option D and create a desk out of your closet like Jen did over at IHeartOrganizing. Check out here post http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2010/12/new-happy-place.html
ReplyDeleteSorry for the super long comment! Good luck can't wait to see what you come up with!
WARNING: don't read this if you are eating :)
ReplyDeletedoes Jemima climb on chairs and sofas to puke? because Lady does that and I can't figure out how to stop that!! ugh!!! Also, on that note, do you have a good cleaning solution you recommend for furniture (cloth).
and...I love D! and...I can't wait to see you soon!
I think you could use the double bed as a day bed- I would just find a way to really "balance" the scale. You might drape some fabric behind the bed all the way from the ceiling to the floor and have really big oversized pillows along the wall to make it really comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure whatever you all decide will look great. Have fun!
We actually used a full-sized bed as a daybed for awhile. I had the same dilemna that you did...that we never stepped foot in our guest room. So we made it into a 'reading room' and created a daybed using lots of pillows and our books organized in there.
ReplyDeleteI went in there every once in a while but not like I thought I would. We wound up moving our rooms around (the guest room became our bedroom, since it had a bigger closet) and when we moved the guest room, we moved the bed back to a traditional set up and added a desk with a hutch for our books.
So far this seems to work best for our needs.
Sorry that was long.... but I totally understand your problem!
How often do you have guests stay with you?
I love your guest bedroom! we have a computer in our spare bedroom, so I guess you'd call it our home office. honestly the only reason I use it is because our laptop is on the fritz. otherwise you would find me lounging on the couch, which is my preferred way to blog surf. :) anyways, your daybed idea is a great one! it's got my vote.
ReplyDeleteI like options B and C (I'm leaning more towards C though). My hubby and I do have a second bedroom that we use as an office. We have two desks and chairs in there (I'm a teacher, he's a college professor), a couple of bookshelves, and a sitting area where we can read/relax. I have to admit, we rarely use our desks. It seems they just get stuff piled on them! But we do enjoy the sitting area. The room has a lot of natural light, like yours, so it's great to read in. We don't have guests over very often, so not having an extra bed isn't that big of a deal. When family comes over, we pull out air mattresses.
ReplyDeleteAnother vote for full bed as a daybed. I used to have a room like option C but I think the bed is much better for guests. It would also be a cozier space for you which is what really matters because you'll be the one using it more than guests.
ReplyDeleteJanet - I love black rooms, too! It's good to know that with a love seat/desk you actually got some use out of the room.
ReplyDeleteLaina - I like those two options the best, too, I think. Thanks so much for the link! Her blog is so awesome and for some reason I always forget about it!
Liz - Ugh, YES! She DOES always hop on furniture to do her vomiting! Why is that?!? Haha, we may never know. I've heard Woolite works great, but I am yet to buy a can. I am so excited to see you too!
Anon #1: Thanks for the suggestion! I love the idea of the draping fabric.
Jenny - Okay, I'm glad to hear from someone that has tried the full bed/daybed thing! Good to know that it didn't work for you guys, I'm leaning towards setting up the home office/desk.
Stacey - Thank you! I like to do my blog-surfing on the couch as well, so I wonder if I'd actually use the home office, but at the same time, maybe I'd be more productive if I made myself sit at a desk? I don't know!
Anon #2 - Oooo ... I really, really like the idea of double desks and chairs! It would be nice for both me and my husband to have a spot of our own to work. We don't have sleepover guests very often either, so like you, it wouldn't be a big deal to lose the extra bed. And soo cool that you and your husband both teach! Do you teach similar subjects?
Melanie - That's a good point! I'm glad you guys don't think I'm weird for wanting a double bed as a day bed!

ReplyDeleteI was looking for a daybed for my daughter and found this site and they do sell full size daybeds. I think they are great. I was thinking of adding lots of pillows to the back and then making two long rolled (neck) pillows for the sides, just so it looked like arm rests and gave the bed more dimension. I like option D because it makes good use of what you have, then you can enjoy it and still have space for company.
I don't know much about daybeds, but I think you'd get the same look from a larger bed - even if it means you have to add more pillows. Either way, I think it would look great and I'd definitely go with D if I was you. Or maybe A but with a desk corner for crafting instead of a home office. Anything for more white waxflower crafting posts! ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't have a guest room as in for overnight guests, but we do have 2 extra bedrooms. One is supposed to be the game room, but is really storage, and the other is a closet/dressing room (which I've also been doing grade-school drawings to try planning out, lol).
