We have a very un-glamorous staircase. I had planned to frown in this picture, but then I thought it needed a coy smile and I Dream of Jeannie pose to compensate for the sad stairs.
All we have under there now is this 50's nightstand (which happens to be the first vintage piece of furniture I ever bought, way back in 2004), and that isn't even it's permanent home.
And, as one reader tragically pointed out to me, they look nearly identical to the Brady family staircase. Yikes.
If I could magically transform them, I would make them look like this. Isn't it brilliant how they painted on either side of the stairs, making a sort of reverse-runner-made-of-wood, if you will?
I do have a few ideas to brighten it up as-is, however. There's an antique store nearby that sells vintage prints like these. I could buy up 8 or so and hang them on the wall under the stairs, using clips like these instead of frames.
I can't figure out where that lamp is hanging from, but I guess sticking furniture and accessories under there isn't such a bad idea.
I'm not interested in putting shelves under the stairs, but I could randomly hang vintage plates on the wall .
Or maybe just throw people off entirely with some really quirky art?
Decisions, decisions. Any suggestions?
hi marygrace,
ReplyDeleteeven though you didn't really ask, i think you should do a collection of something. whether it's the prints from the antique store, plates or paint by number seaside prints. i just think a special little area like that needs a special little collection.
can't wait to see what you come up with.

If it was my space I would do a buffet type piece of furniture and plates or the fun art on clips above it. Add a fun lamp and a few decorative items and you're all set! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteOMG it totally is the brady bunch staircase, I promise I'm not making fun! Whatever you choose to do will be fabulous! Can't wait to see the results! xoxo
ReplyDeletePaint works miracles!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest a collection of sorts, similar to Janet's comment. Because it's the classic "under the stairs" location, you need something interesting to spice it up, and the items should be cohesive so it doesn't look like an afterthought. A collection of plates would be nice and semi-traditional, as would a series of the vintage animal prints.
ReplyDeleteI love the vintage prints! Possibly the vintage prints and a little table and chair to serve as a place to drop keys, etc and pay bills?
